Lorena W. Hekkel, 97, of Culbertson, MT passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at the Roosevelt Memorial Nursing Home in Culbertson, MT.

Lorena Wilma was born on August 4th, 1926 to Dan and Ella (Krueger) Schledewitz near Froid, Montana. She was baptized and confirmed a Lutheran and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Culbertson, MT. After graduation Culbertson High School in 1944, she worked as a telephone operator until her marriage to John “Pete” Hekkel on September 29, 1946. To this union, two children were born, Perry & Marcia.

Lorena had one of the best smiles, a loving and caring personality, and a great sense of humor. She was happiest when surrounded by friends and family drinking coffee, visiting and playing cards. Some of her hobbies were German cooking and making homemade noodles, crocheting, playing Pinochle, watching Jeopardy and many more.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church’s WELCA, American Legion Auxiliary, Homemaker’s Club, Culbertson Museum, and served as church secretary for many years.

Lorena is survived by her sister, Ila Mae Mattingley of California; sisters-in-law; many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Pete; daughter, Marcia; son, Perry; her parents, her brothers, LaVern, Dave, Wilbert & Ray; and her sister, Lenora.

I remember Lorena from my days in Culbertson. I had a number of meals at her house in the 70's.
