C. Hubert Johnson
November 18, 1927 - October 23, 2024

Place of Birth: Sidney, Montana
Residence: Sidney, Montana
Age: 96

Carl Hubert Johnson, 96, of Sidney, MT passed away on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at the Sidney Health Center in Sidney, MT, surrounded by his family.

Hubert, as he was known by family and friends throughout his life, was born November 18, 1927, at Sidney Memorial Hospital in Sidney, MT, to Carl and Prudence Johnson.

Hubert attended Sidney public schools and worked alongside his brother Paul and father Carl as a young boy helping at the family business, Johnson Hardware and Furniture. Hubert graduated from Sidney High School in 1945. He was a member and captain of the Eastern Montana championship football team in 1942.

He attended Montana State University briefly before joining the U.S Army after WWII and served as a Company Clerk in Japan during the Occupation. After being honorably discharged, he graduated from the University of Montana with a business degree. Hubert returned to eastern Montana where he worked for a short time in a hardware store in Plentywood, MT., before returning home to Sidney to take over at Johnson Hardware and Furniture following the death of his father in 1957.

Hubert met the love of his life, Lucille Rasmusan, while she was working as the nurse assigned to his father when Carl was in the hospital prior to his death. It was a whirlwind romance, and the happy couple was united in marriage on May 16, 1957.

The couple had two children: Kevin in 1958 and Nicole in 1959.

Hubert was joined by his younger brother Paul in the family business a few months later and together they expanded the business over the course of several decades until Hubert retired in 1996.

Hubert was a strong supporter of the Sidney community and was active in many local civic organizations. He was a generous financial contributor to local causes. Over the years he served on several local boards and committees, including Sidney Health Center and Stockman Bank. Hubert was also a member of the City of Sidney Planning Commission in the late 1950’s.

Although Hubert thoroughly enjoyed traveling with his wife and family, he considered Sidney the best place on earth. Hubert took his family on many road trips across Montana and America. He traveled the world with Lucille visiting numerous ports of call. They spent many winters in beautiful Myrtle Beach, SC., prior to Lucille’s death in 2005. Hubert continued to winter in SC for many more years where he was able to continue his love of golf.

Golf was perhaps Hubert’s greatest pleasure. He and his brother Paul golfed 18 holes five days a week at the Sidney Country Club for more than 20 years after the two retired. Hubert passed his love of golf on to the next generation of the Johnson family.

Hubert also had a deep love for music and was a "semi-capable" trombone player in the Army. He passed down his trombone "skills" to his son Kevin and grandsons Jesse and Sam.

Hubert had a large group of friends and enjoyed morning coffee with them for decades.

Hubert spent the final months of his life at the Sidney Health Center and Extended Care Facility where he made a new community of friends. Hubert often praised the care he received from the kind professionals at SHC and ECF.

Hubert is survived by his two children, Kevin Johnson and Nicole (LeRoy) Hileman; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, brother and parents.

I have many fond memories of Hubert over the many years as a customer, taking the EMT course together, hosting him at McKenzie Bay and visiting him in Myrtle Beach. A more humble and caring man… one would be hard to find!

Kevin, and family we are sorry to hear that Herbert passed. One thing Mark always said about Herbert was he might not see you for a year but he would still remember your name. He was a kind man, this community has lost a very good man.

Nicole and Kevin, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Hubert always thanked me for playing music at the senior meals. I didn't know he played trombone. It was a pleasure to shop at Johnson Hardware, as he always came out to greet me. He definitely was a people person. I enjoyed being a part of the coffee group when possible.
